Hotspots DVD

Our Price: $24.99

Item No.: POTS601
Single DVD

In the late 1980s, scientists coined the word "hotspots" to refer to those areas on the planet which were populated by the largest number of unique plant, animal and insect species at risk of going extinct. Hotspots chronicles the work of Dr. Russell Mittermeier as he shows how many conservation efforts are succeeding throughout the world; and what it takes to negotiate a sustainable future for life on Earth.

A DEEPLY MOVING EXPERIENCE!

By Lucy the Paleontologist/Explorer

from Andorra

Comments about PBS Hotspots DVD:

It's easy to see how most wildlife films are made. This is entirely different, a whole new "frontier" of filmmaking that we recommend for all audiences. The message is magnificently conveyed and urgently needed. Thank you, PBS!

The Real Deal!

Comments about PBS Hotspots DVD:

There have been countless wildlife films. This is the first conservation biology/animal rights film, and it is a knock-out; utterly magnetic. Dancing Star Foundation and PBS make a perfect fit and Dr. Mittermeier, President of Conservation International, conveys a message of depth, of hope, of beauty and nobility that has never been matched in feature film making. This is one of those truly "must-see" features. We hope President Obama and every other world leader will buy this for themselves, and for their kids. Their children, after all, are the ones who will either wake up to a world devoid of tigers, elephants and blue whales, or not. It's up to us, our generation. This film shows us how to do it and the appeal is as scientific as it is spiritual. Amazing piece of work!

The Best Environmental Film of the Year!

By Helen Freeman

from Cape Cod, Massachussetts

Comments about PBS Hotspots DVD:

Tobias, Morrison and Mittermeier make for remarkable alchemy. The work of Dancing Star Foundation, and that of Conservation International, captured here in this two hour feature documentary is pure magic. More species in one film that I have ever seen, and shot in a manner that is authentic - no props, or the normal "tricks" used by wildlife filmmakers to ge their shot, even resorting to putting reptiles in refrigerators to slow them down for filming. Tobias and Morrison's films (like No Vacancy and Mad Cowboy) are absolutely devastating in their clarity, implications, and elegant story telling. This is definitely one of the finest documentary films ever made. A must see for everyone in ecology, policy, international environmentalism, and the sheer joy of seeing so many species, including new ones, never before seen on film (and quite a few NEW species to science).

Comments about PBS Hotspots DVD:

Really a fabulous film! There have been wildlife films (mostly with set-up shots); but this is the first authentic conservation film I've ever seen. This is the real deal. Highly recommended for all scientists, students, educators and families.
