Physicists at Fermilab, the world's most powerful particle accelerator laboratory, are closing in on one of the universe's best-kept secrets: why everything has mass. With the Tevatron, a four-mile underground particle accelerator, the scientists smash matter together at nearly the speed of light to find a particle theorized forty years ago by Scottish scientist Peter Higgs. Comments about PBS Independent Lens: The Atom Smashers DVD:

This film offers an educated glimpse into the world of high energy physics. Some of the most important work in history has been dedicated to this science and this film offers a look into the exciting world of science in America and how the lack of funding for important projects is leading science research and interest to other countries outside of America, which for decades was considered the leader in physics.
