Comments about PBS P.O.V.: The Judge and the General DVD:
I was there when this happens one of the principal problems was that the country was devided and this documentary forgot to mention another points that were so important even today many chileans remenber Pinochet as a hero and the other like a criminal it was so hard for the chilean people to get into reality what really was happening in those days even in this days
Comments about PBS P.O.V.: The Judge and the General DVD:
Luengo's review is important and raises important issues that are extremely current and need addressing. However, this film serves other, positive, purposes important for those who may not have knowledge of Chile and its history. It educates us about one (of many) cases of terrorism and the role of the U.S. in it. It educates us about one person of considerable power who didn't stop when the truth became apparent - a role model for me and for my grandchildren. It demands that we confront broad moral issues of power, hate, and the dark side of humanity. There ARE important redeeming qualities in this film and I will watch it and talk about it with my grandchildren.
Comments about PBS P.O.V.: The Judge and the General DVD:
This powerful documentary had me in tears several times while I watched. It offers a view of Chilean people, torn apart by their interests and preconceptions, that reminded me of us.
The judge, errors, warts and all, is as human and compassionate as any of us may aspire to be.
Don't miss it, it will electrify you. Hats off to Farnsworth!
Comments about PBS P.O.V.: The Judge and the General DVD:
Chilean dictator Pinochet had successfully avoided facing charges of murder and criminal activities until he was successfully charged with complicity in multiple murders by a judge who had initially supported his coming to power in a coup in 1973. After horrendous abuses of civil rights by Pinochet, Judge Guzman was swayed into prosecuting him for crimes against humanity.
Comments about PBS P.O.V.: The Judge and the General DVD:
Good documentary BUT it doesn't tell the audience that it was Chile's newly elected president, Ricardo Lagos who pressured the British government to release Pinochet. Unfortunately it doesn't dig enough in the complicity of the Chilean Supreme Court, the political parties in power today and the institutions of the Chilean state. All of them decided long time ago to look the other way and prosecute only the most symbolic human rights cases. Out of the thousands of human rights violators in Chile today only a hand full (10%) are in prison today. The few high ranking officers in prison live in luxury detention centers and have access to swimming pools, internet, satellite TV, tennis court, private quarters, visitor every day, and personal chefs. All of this information was made public by Chilean newspapers a few months ago. The truth is that Chile and its institutions have not done enough when it comes to human rights and neither does this documentary.
