Comments about PBS The Morgan Lacrosse Story DVD:
I attended Boys Latin and McDonogh in Baltimore. That is about as good as LAX gets. I never had any intention of becoming a coach let alone in lacrosse where I was just too big and too slow to be competitive at these schools in this sport after 10th grade. Well becoming a father changed that as I coached first girls lacrosse and then boys lacrosse. I became an assistant coach to an African American man who came from Long Island. Despite his Long Island heritage we have become lifelong friends as a result of this common love of Lacrosse. We had a great record in coaching club teams of U-15 and U-19. We also do an inner city clinic once a year in Richmond. He just emailed me to ask would I do it again and I said only if we hand out this DVD and only if we have a ready made schedule of times and dates when we will be back down on that field to teach kids how to play.
This film teaches that it is not money and privilege that make great players it is athleticism and passion. Consider Navy and Army Lacrosse, not one of those kids went there to play Lacrosse but the schools they compete against almost all offer athletic scholarships. That tells you this sport can be taught to those who have athletic ability and passion. What inner city kids need is coaches who will be there and who will care about helping them to succeed and provide a means of acquiring equipment. The Morgan Lacrosse Story is more about this than anything else. If they could do as much as they did for the short period of time that they had a team then think of what is going to happen as coaches and equipment become available to little boys and girls who were never able to compete before. Basketball is a great sport and I love watching it but all it requires to start is a bouncing ball and a hoop to throw it through. Lacrosse requires a set of equipment to play safely that for many people is unimaginably expensive. It also requires people who know the sport and who care enough to show up and teach. I hope to see lacrosse become established in our inner cities and among youth who will find it to be a great outlet. Please get this DVD and make people watch it.
