Comments about PBS American Experience: Roberto Clemente DVD:
It's hard to believe its been 39 years since Roberto Clemente was taken from us in a plane crash. Yet his spirit, his humanitarianism and overall decency remain equal to his achievements on the baseball field. This American Experience DVD is the quintessential biography of this legend. In spite of racial attitudes of the time, Roberto Clemente rose far above it all. He did not have to prove himself a man to anyone. That he was. Yet he proved himself a gifted ballplayer who brought pride not to himself, but to Puerto Rico, the Nation, Latin America and baseball itself. Yet beyond this, he was color-blind to race, creed or national origin. When the 1972 earthquake struck Managua, Nicaragua, the true essence of who Roberto was emerged. Borders were no obstacles to his reaching out to those suffering and in need. That is how he lived and to the very end. He will never be forgotten on and off the baseball field.

This is an excellent documentary, a fantastic piece of sports history, and Latino history in the U.S. Very well done and researched film. Excellent for baseball fans and for teaching in the classroom.
Comments about PBS American Experience: Roberto Clemente DVD:
As a child I learned to idolize Clemente. It's enlightening as an adult to rediscover that here was a man who truly deserved my youthful admiration. He was simply the best, both as an athlete and a human being. The documentary is excellent - it should have been three hours long.
