In the early days of World War I, Germany, determined to bring its British enemies to their knees, launched a new kind of terror campaign: bombing civilians from the sky. The aircraft delivering the lethal payloads weren't planes, they were Zeppelins, enormous airships, some the length of two football fields. With a team of engineers, explosives experts, and historians, NOVA investigates the secrets behind these deadly war machines.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Zeppelin Terror Attack DVD:

I have to confess: I had never before heard of the Germans using Zeppelins to bomb England during WWI, but the account was fascinating! I can always count on NOVA for interesting, entertaining information.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Zeppelin Terror Attack DVD:

I have not really studied WWI history and so was not aware that this type of attack was perpetrated on the U.K. I thought the first civilian attacks occurred in WWII. Seems this thought of terrorizing the civilian population was prevalent with certain German Military planners even during the Great War.
I cannot comment on the accuracy of the information of the attacks as some other reviewers have but this intrigued me so much I had to purchase it and will do further investigation of these attacks from other sources.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Zeppelin Terror Attack DVD:

First of all, huzzah and kudos to PBS for taking on such an arcane subject. The strength and weakness in the approach of this documentary is the superb and, at times, misleading visuals and CGI.

The demonstrations of ordinance are interesting and I learned quite a lot, despite my previous reading on the subject matter. However, the CGI effects of a BE2c fighter attacking a zeppelin in near-vertical climb, and a zeppelin practically scraping its underside on the gothic spires of the Houses of Parliament, are silly, especially after so much time is taken to explain that these monsters flew at altitudes above 20K feet as part of their defense. In another scene, the CGI shows hordes of zeppelins flying in a formation as tightly as a school of fish, when, in fact, they were dispesed all over the country side.

As a small quibble, I was sad that the heated competition between the Army Zeppelin Service and the Navy (commanded by Peter Strasser, the star of this documentary) was not given ANY mention. It was an ARMY zeppelin (commanded by Erich Linnarz) that first successfully bombed London, beating Strasser's zeppelins to the punch. However, you do not learn this from the documentary.

Finally, I was sorry that the Gotha pilots and other fixed-wing giant bombers, who replaced the zeppelins and whose bombing raids on London in 1917, were given NO mention. These were a truer foreshadowing of the bombing of population centers to come in future wars.

Although I was disappointed overall, I think the kids will love the explosions and the CGI of scary behemoths looming improbably over a doomed city. The adults will find the demonstrations of the science behind incendiary bullets and bombs fascinating.
