In 1897, Robert Peary returned to New York from his latest Arctic expedition with five Eskimos for study at the American Museum of Natural history. Anthropology regarded the Eskimos as a rare species. Within months, four of the Eskimos died, leaving a young boy, Minik, alone in a foreign land. This program offers a thought-provoking look at the intersection of race, culture and the budding science of anthropology at the turn of the 20th century.

A study of anthropology in the Dark Age

By admonern

from Winnebago, Il.

Comments about PBS American Experience: Minik, the Lost Eskimo DVD:

An unbelievable and heartbreaking story. Indigenous people were really not thought of as equals- they were experiments for anthropologists of the day. This poor little boy's horror story at the hands of "scientists", is shocking and reprehensible. PBS did a great job in telling this important story.
