An epic labor strike that devastated Michigan's Copper Country in 1913 haunts the American labor movement to this day. Among the notable elements of that strike was the death of 73 children at a union Christmas party, a tragedy immortalized by Woody Guthrie in his ballad "1913 Massacre," performed in the film by Steve Earle. The event remains the deadliest unsolved manslaughter in U.S. history.

We have visited the Keewenau Peninsula many times, and have seen some of the buildings mentioned in the film. Seeing the full story is really interesting.

Comments about PBS Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 DVD:

Too often the struggles of working people are forgotten in our era of laissez faire capitalism. This 100th anniversary tribute to the victims of the Italian Hall murders and the copper miners whose just cause the government, management and the police combined to betray is a welcome addition to labour history.

Comments about PBS Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 DVD:

This DVD explains the details of the strike through interviews with top historians on the subject. Loads of historic photographs and present-day images of Calumet bring the history to life and give it perspective a century after the disaster.

Comments about PBS Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 DVD:

My interest in viewing and then purchasing Red Metal centers around my family's history as my Dad was one of the children at the Christmas party. The story goes that an adult passed him out a window to someone, thus saving his life. This video version of the story effectively depicts the essential elements of the labor conditions and the relations between management and labor at the time. I would be interested in seeing some aspects of the video enhanced to provide more detail as to the role of outside forces and the working conditions. Definitely enjoyed the movie. Thanks for featuring it.

Comments about PBS Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 DVD:

The story of how the working man fought to have a better life for his family should be shown over and over, so that we never forgot the blessing that they have bestowed on us today...
