In Austen's gentle parody of gothic fiction, Felicity Jones (Meadowlands) plays romance addict Catherine Morland. Invited to a medieval country house that appeals to her most lurid fantasies, she forms a close friendship with the younger son on the estate, Henry Tilney (JJ Feild, The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton), but their budding romance is mysteriously cut short. Adapted by Andrew Davies.

The previous reviewer must not have read Austen's Northanger Abbey recently to understand it's not similar in content as her previous works. It portrays the gothic style theme common in books 'in her time' of love, stratagem, loss...

The pureness of C. Morland's family ties though not elaborated too much in this adaptation is still left to enjoyed and reflected upon by the imagination. Also, what the previous reviewer see as 'shallow fantasizing' can equate to one having a vivid imagination in a time when only reading and the piano forte could be enjoyed. Rejection of this adaptation is like rejecting Austen's original Northanger Abbey! One can only deduce that prior to watching the movie, they and their family should have been aware of Austen's content of this particular novel...it is after all her darkest.

Lastly, I'd rather watch this adaptation of Northanger Abbey than watch any of the CURRENT 'moral trash' with graphic violence, promiscuous beings with no shame, desensitized moral standards allowed to play in theatres for all impressionable eyes to see. These Jane Austen Classic, one and all, should be played on the local theatres to delight the imagination of the masses.

4 stars instead of 5 -- it ended too soon.

A lighthearted moral tale of virtue rewarded--I loved it.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Northanger Abbey DVD (U.K. Edition):

I've seen two movie adaptations of "Northanger Abbey." The first was awful, but I enjoyed this one very much. Just as "bodice ripper" romances are popular with some readers now, there were titillating novels of romance and the supernatural that shocked and amazed the sheltered young ladies of Jane Austen's time. This story is a bit "tongue in cheek." It gently makes fun of the main character who has been escaping her quiet, ordinary life by reading these spicy and thrilling stories. As a result, her imagination runs away with her when she is invited to visit a wealthy family with a mysterious and sad past living in a spooky castle. In fact, her suspicions about the father almost ruin her budding romance with the son. Our heroine learns some painful but valuable lessons, virtue triumphs, and all the deserving and amiable characters are rewarded with happiness, of course. I found it a delightful and amusing bit of harmless escapism, which we can all use now and then.
