On May 7, 1945 at Allied command in Rheims, France, Col. Gen. Alfred Jodl, representing the German High Command, signed the formal unconditional surrender of all German forces, celebrated here by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander. On September 2, 1945, Japan formally signed the official Instrument of Surrender. The ceremonies took place aboard the battleship U.S.S. Missouri, and signified the official end of World War II.
