On April 25, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published their groundbreaking discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. But their crucial breakthrough depended on the pioneering work of another biologist, Rosalind Franklin. 50 years later, NOVA investigates the shocking truth behind one of the greatest scientific discoveries and presents a moving portrait of a brilliant woman in an era of male-dominated science.

Comments about PBS NOVA: DNA: Secret of Photo 51 DVD:

This was a perfect episode of Nova,it told the truth about this important breakthrough in biology.Crick and Watson were giving all the credit for the discovery of the double helix,But it was the pioneering work Of Rosiland Franklin using Xray technigues that led to its discovery.Sadly this might have been the cause of her death of cancer at a young age due to over exposure of radiation.I read the book by Crick and watson. But, this episode of Nova really tells the truth.Dr Frankln is a true heroine of science

Sexism, bias, and cheating

Comments about PBS NOVA: DNA: Secret of Photo 51 DVD:

This documentary of Rosalind Franklin's impressive contributions to medical science reveals not only her remarkable discoveries, dedication and altruistic nature, but sexism and the cut-throat nature of medical research in the "publish or perish" mode. Viewers will get both a look at Franklin's amazing work and a perspective on the human condition. Highly recommended!

Comments about PBS NOVA: DNA: Secret of Photo 51 DVD:

This excellent program is one of the videos that I use with my high school biology class. Not only does it give Rosalind Franklin the credit she earned, but it reveals the human interest story behind perhaps the most significant biological discovery of the 20th century. Students gain an appreciation for all the personality and politics that may be involved in scientific endeavors; and they learn that great breakthroughs involve the work of many scientists.
