This series addresses almost all aspects of U.S. involvement in World War II, from combat operations to the "Home Front" in a very unbiased, and sometimes disturbing fasion. It destroys the myth that we were all in it together when it addresses the racial tensions that occured, both in the factories, and in the military. It also is very good at showing that wars are fought by young people, not "Supermen". Most had no idea what they are signing up for, they are just good people who believe they are doing the right thing. As a retired NCO, I recognized many people I could have served with, in circumstances that are horrific to say the least. Ken Burns hit all these issues, without putting any special twist on the subject, he just let the people who lived through it do the talking.

I really like the concept of this documentary, following four American cities and its citizens during World War II. I like the human stories told and getting to know the individuals.
This series, however, really shows a lot-- and I mean A LOT-- of dead bodies. I understand the costs of war and that World War II killed a lot of people, military and civilian, but as a viewer, I do not need to see bodies every two minutes. I am not overly sensitive, in general, to it, but Burns really hits the viewer over the head repeatedly with these views. This series is pretty singularly focused on showing bodies and describing body counts. I found it kind of disturbing.

Comments about PBS The War: A Ken Burns Film, Directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick 6PK DVD:
The War is the mother of all WWII documentaries. It chronicals not only the war itself, but the war effort machine that was built in the United States. The stories of the people who worked in the factories to support the war, and the sacrifices people at home made are as compelling as the stories about the war itself. Highly recommended!
