Beautiful. Fascinating. Emotional. Art is all of the above. But only a few are powerful. Focusing on eight iconic works of art, Power of Art reveals the history of visual imagination through the ages, from the murderous world of baroque Rome to paranoid, revolutionary Paris; from the carnage of civil-war Spain to the paradox of 1950s New York, caught between Cold War jitters and Manhattan glitter.

I caught parts of 2 episodes, which I loved. As a professional artist who has little patience with art critics, I was impressed by Schama's response to each artwork; the twaddle quotient was minimal, his ideas worthy of contemplation.

HOWEVER, as much as I would like to view the whole series, it would be a waste for me to buy the DVD because it is not captioned (the broadcasts on PBS were captioned). I am nearly deaf and require captions to sort out pieces of dialog I am unable to decode with my ears. This is a shame. PBS, with its mandate to serve the public, should not exclude persons with disabilities from enjoying audiovisual material.

Comments about PBS Simon Schama's The Power of Art 3PK DVD:

Initially I was reading the education lesson plans. I was immediately drawn to comparing Picasso's Guernica to 911, connecting the past to present terrorism. Knowing the curiosity factor would draw college students'interest, anger, outrage, grief and sadness. After viewing the DVD I knew this would be a winner art appreciation class.

Comments about PBS Simon Schama's The Power of Art 3PK DVD:

Highly dramatized and very accessible, and the captions were fine on my copies...altho a bit tricky to get "on" (it appears to be "off"). I've used with many ages and it is well - recieved by all. I only wish here were more of the Schama series.

Comments about PBS Simon Schama's The Power of Art 3PK DVD:

Each episode is beautifully realized, engaging and insightful. It brings a new light to so many different works of art, but most importantly, provides an intimate history of each featured artist. I love it myself, as do my classes of high school students. I highly recommend this set.
