Comments about PBS Young Doctor Freud DVD:

This is an excellent film about Freud's early life and career. His theories about psychoanalysis and the unconscious are explained very well by various experts in the field of psychology. His life story is reenacted and narrated very well also. I give this film four stars based on this. However, it is not the most exciting or enthralling program to watch. The filmmakers, actors, and others who made this film are not at fault. It is just the subject matter itself. Other than individuals completely fascinated by science and possibly by psychology specifically, I do not think most lay people would find Freud's story all that interesting. Freud did not engage in war, conquest, or discovery in exotic locations, his discoveries were scientific, and the battles he fought were against the conventions and restrictions of his times and his chosen profession. Still, this film tells an important story about a man who revolutionized the science of psychology and contributed greatly to our understanding of ourselves as human beings. I am very pleased to have it as part of my PBS movie collection.
