This is my favorite Masterpiece movie to-date. After watching the first time and being so completely consumed by it, thanks to the actors' incredible performances, I found myself feeling a range of lingering emotions and quite confused as to why. I anxiously awaited the replay night a few nights later to see if I could find the rationale for my emotions. The story is fantastic and the actors use such a strong, almost tangible tension with facial expressions and body language, that they draw the viewer in to a point where the world around them disappears. That is rare in movies these days. I cannot say enough about these two main actors' performance.
I would also add that Stephens is extremely attractive, and I believe his facial expressions used in his acting make me see him as a next-generation Armand Assante - the only other actor to draw me in so severely.
Thank you for the mental escape to 1800s England.

I see I'm in the minority here, but I really didn't like this version too well. Yes, Toby was looking good as usual, but I didn't feel that this version stayed true to Bronte's novel as did the earlier 1973 version. I even preferred the 1983 version to this one, as well as the 1970 version starring George C. Scott.

In general, I like(+/-) the Brontes, but don't read them with bated breath or heaving bosom. However, for me, Jane Eyre represents the pinnacle of the Brontes efforts. This particular production is extraordinarily well presented. It takes the time to create vivid, compelling characters enmeshed in situations, which are not always of their own design but which will color course and choices of their lives.
On a more personal note, I give my mom movies on a regular basis. Recently, she mentioned that her favorite was the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. I determined that if she loved P&P, she'd love Jane Eyre. So, I sent it to her for Mother's Day. God, I love being right!
