In the summer of 1942 an American and a Japanese ace fighter pilot faced off during a dramatic dogfight over Guadalcanal. Eventually the Japanese pilot shot down the American, who crashed behind enemy lines but escaped before being captured. Using both pilots' memoirs, and following a forensic expedition to the recently-found American plane, Dogfight Over Guadalcanal examines and recreates every anxious second of this showdown over the Pacific.

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: Dogfight Over Guadalcanal DVD:

Ralph Wetterhahn, one of the planners and Robin Olds' wingman on Operation Bolo, is a great strategist and aircraft investigator. I can think of no one better to explain this dogfight from wreckage exposed in the jungles. Residents are interviewed about the event and the difficulties faced by the downed pilot. Computer Generated Imagery of the dogfight is applied well in the telling of this story.
