Casanova is the world's most notorious lover, addicted to the pleasures of the flesh. From his glamorous youth in Venice to his old age in an obscure castle, Casanova (played by David Tennant and Peter O'Toole) travels the world, loving many, but unable to find true happiness without the married Henriette (Laura Fraser). An encounter brings back memories as Casanova is dying, and he desperately attempts to see Henriette once more.

Before he brought The Doctor back to life Russell T. Davies breathed a new existence into the iconic Casanova. Russell T. Davies fills this new take on the legendary lover with laughter, love and tears. Through the memories of an older Casanova, so well portrayed by Peter O'Toole, we see the mad adventures of Casanova from his humble beginnings as the son of actress. David Tennant portrays Casanova from the age of 21 on and does so brilliantly. David Tennant takes you through Casanova's beginnings in Venice onto his adventures throughout Europe where he goes on the run, invents the lottery and explains the differences between the English and Italians. Rupert Penry-Jones does a fantastic job as Casanova's rival Grimani. You aren't sure whether you want to shoot him or feel sorry for him. With appearances from "Little Britain"'s Matt Lucas and the fabulous score by Murray Gold, Russell T. Davies has created a fantastic world.

This is both a humorous and touching story with a fantastic cast that brings it all together.

I had really looked forward to this DVD, but was ultimately disappointed. Unlike most Masterpiece series, this one presented itself as a historical piece, but the writers obviously wanted to throw in a lot of contemporary humor and language, and the costumes were often very "arty" and over-the-top in a wierd way - not based on true history. The whole story is done very tongue-in-cheek and David Tennant appeared to be ad-libbing his lines at times (at least it didn't seem very scripted). I was surprised that some very fine actors, such as Peter O'Toole and Rose Byrne would appear in such a poor production. Sorry, but it just wasn't my kind of entertainment. All the characters came across as either obnoxious or overly sentimental, and I found Tennant's Casanova to be a very unlikeable character. There is a lot of sex, but very limited nudity.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD (U.K. Edition):

I saw a version on BBC in the seventies in England. It may have also been shown on PBS then but the memory is fading. Resurrect that and compare the ratings.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD (U.K. Edition):

I am glad I saw this production, the cast was wonderful! Special nods to David Tennant who continues to astonish me with his presence, and Peter O'Toole for being wonderful (as usual). Made me laugh and even tear up. On a note though this is about Casanova and thus there are some scenes that you may not want to watch with your Gran. Overall funny, cute, touching and wonderfully entertaining.

Not your father's Casanova

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD (U.K. Edition):

funny, touching, a great watch. I could watch this and not hate the main character! He doesn't hate women, he just enjoys life and is a little unaware of other people. Interesting take, but that's Russell T. Davies for you. I think David Tennant used the same character to play Doctor Who.
