Not Up to Masterpiece Standards

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD:

I had really looked forward to this DVD, but was ultimately disappointed. Unlike most Masterpiece series, this one presented itself as a historical piece, but the writers obviously wanted to throw in a lot of contemporary humor and language, and the costumes were often very "arty" and over-the-top in a wierd way - not based on true history. The whole story is done very tongue-in-cheek and David Tennant appeared to be ad-libbing his lines at times (at least it didn't seem very scripted). I was surprised that some very fine actors, such as Peter O'Toole and Rose Byrne would appear in such a poor production. Sorry, but it just wasn't my kind of entertainment. All the characters came across as either obnoxious or overly sentimental, and I found Tennant's Casanova to be a very unlikeable character. There is a lot of sex, but very limited nudity.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD:

I am glad I saw this production, the cast was wonderful! Special nods to David Tennant who continues to astonish me with his presence, and Peter O'Toole for being wonderful (as usual). Made me laugh and even tear up. On a note though this is about Casanova and thus there are some scenes that you may not want to watch with your Gran. Overall funny, cute, touching and wonderfully entertaining.

Not your father's Casanova

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD:

funny, touching, a great watch. I could watch this and not hate the main character! He doesn't hate women, he just enjoys life and is a little unaware of other people. Interesting take, but that's Russell T. Davies for you. I think David Tennant used the same character to play Doctor Who.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD:

I bought this movie and was very disappointed that I could not enjoy the movie as I am hard of hearing and need subtitles/caption. Does anyone know where I can get Casanova with captions, etc.?

Tennant's 'breakthrough role'!

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Casanova DVD:

To address the comment about it being a horrible movie - it is not the traditional take on the legendary lothario but a fun and smart-*ssed interpretation of the story of Casanova.

It brings together three greats of British drama - writer Russell T. Davies, composer Murray Gold and the acting genius that is David Tennant!

A wonderful cast brings this version of the story to life adorned with lush costumes and surrounded by beautiful scenery!

A must have for any David Tennant fan!
