This stunning adaptation tells the story of three Kings, Richard II, Henry IV & Henry V and their battle for survival. Shakespeare's epic yet intimate plays are filmed in the visually breathtaking landscape and architecture of the period. Superb performances by Ben Whishaw, Tom Hiddleston & Jeremy Irons are not to be missed. These rich films are woven with the some of Shakespeare's finest poetry.

Shakespeare would have loved this!

Comments about PBS The Hollow Crown: The Complete Series DVD:

These four fresh interpretations of Shakespeare's great history plays have haunted me since I viewed them last spring on PBS. Finally, after months of reviewing scenes in my mind I decided I needed to own them. Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddelston, are, in turn, supported by fine casts as each embodies a ruler driven and haunted by his own failings, intentions and desires. I wept for each of them. Fans of Kenneth Branagh's Henry V will be astonished at the power of this entirely different presentation of the St. Crispin's speech. I believe I will only ever hear it this way again.

Stunning production!

Comments about PBS The Hollow Crown: The Complete Series DVD:

This four-part production of Richard II, Henry IV Parts I and II, and Henry V is a well-paced version of Shakespeare's tetralogy, one of two of the later Plantagenet line of English kings. Conceived and produced for a television series, it has excised some text of the original plays with the aim of adapting to a modern audience who may not have seen any of the plays before. I've seen a number of live and film productions of these plays, which are magnificent works of poetry and a part of Western literature not to be missed. But I was completely immersed in the historical drama presented in this series, by actors of tremendous talent, each of them well cast in his role. I enjoyed the excellent development of character and portrayal of relationships -- which can be confusing even to students of these plays -- and have been motivated to explore the works in greater detail (in "Sheakespeare's English Kings - History, Chronicle, and Drama," by Peter Saccio, Oxford Univ Press). I recommend this series enthusiastically to any lover, or would-be lover, of Shakespeare. They are a compelling introduction to the plays for those not familiar with them, as well as a lovely reacquantance for viewers who haven't seen them for an extended time.

Comments about PBS The Hollow Crown: The Complete Series DVD:

I am very happy with my CDs. We studied Henry V at school and Tom Hiddleston did a great job on the famous speeches-brought tears to my eyes as I live in America now. ..also Patrick Stewart's turn as John of Gaunt with HIS famous speech on "This jewel...this scepter'd isle..." etc.
