Her name is synonymous with the French monarchy and all its excesses, but there is more to the story of Marie Antoinette than the simple tale of how a frivolous sovereign helped provoke the uprising that became the French Revolution. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker David Grubin paints a surprising portrait of a courageous figure and traces her journey from the splendors of a childhood in the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire to a French guillotine.

Comments about PBS Marie Antoinette DVD Unedited Version:

It is useful to see the historic data presented here as opposed to the commercial versions of the life of Marie Antoinette and those around her at that time period.

It was not an easy time to live.

Comments about PBS Marie Antoinette DVD Unedited Version:

Excellent and thorough hitorical journey along Marie Antoinette's live's tragic, ignorance and where it lead her.

I don't much like having to read translations at the bottom of the screen. I think those who spoke French chose NOT to speak English for those portions.

Good visals.

Comments about PBS Marie Antoinette DVD Unedited Version:

The story balances all Marie's strengths and weaknesses. It covers her entire life and explains away several of the myths surrounding her. It showed most of the significant sites figuring in her history. The only minus was it could have explained more of the background political motivations for what the rest of Europe was doing during the French Revolution. Overall, well done.

Good for M-A overview but read the book

Comments about PBS Marie Antoinette DVD Unedited Version:

I ordered this DVD when I returned from France & had visited Versailles. I have also just finished reading Antonia Fraser's book on Marie-Antoinette and since the book was used for the DVD, it was like a Coles Notes of the book. However, the DVD's pace keeps your interest although the information in the book gives much more detail. What a sad ending to a girl who was used as a pawn in her mother's royal scheme.
