The struggle between heroes and villains and the influence of a higher force are the essence of mythology and resonate within all cultures, providing storytellers with a natural framework for spinning tales. In this program, using extensive film clips from the Star Wars saga, George Lucas discusses his efforts to tell old myths in new ways, the role of faith in his own life, and the influence of his mentor, Joseph Campbell.

A false statement

Comments about PBS The Mythology of Star Wars DVD:

In the succeeding years it's become more evident both Joseph Campbell and George Lucas used the other to help them make more of their created products - STAR WARS by Lucas and THE POWER OF MYTH for Campbell. Each needed the other to add credibility. Campbell needed for his dry research to appear relevant, while Lucas wanted people to take seriously his blatant rip-off of 30s movie serials. Each benefited from there mutual admiration society.

Comments about PBS The Mythology of Star Wars DVD:

This DVD came in handy when we discussed epic hero and epic journey. Students are able to relate more with something they all know and understand. We really enjoyed it and I will use again and again.
