First, I must disagree with one reviewer who thought that the treatment of Anna's sexual assault was in poor taste. I'm sure things like this did happen, and the victim would have to deal with it as best she could. The violence shown was in keeping with and proportionate to the attack. It's time to take the wraps of supposed "propriety" off the brutal aspects of these attacks; in fact, I thought it was quite discreet in the treatment, given the nature of what occurred. Anna's decision to move back into the main house should certainly spark some dramatic difficulties vis-a-vis the other characters, but especially her husband, whose tragic background creates a true dramatic tension, worthy of both the characters and and the plot. And the attraction between Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham is set up against the background of his valet being Anna's attacker! Am hoping this event won't get the cursory, tossed-off treatment of other developments so far! Or is this Mary-Lord Gillingham development already finished?

Speaking of which, does anyone else think this season's episodes, so far, seem compressed, with the events not getting more than a fleeting nod? No development of character or story; we just roll from one new character and plot tweak to the next with barely time for breath. There were even a couple of new characters whose role I didn't quite get, their appearances were so hasty. I hope this changes, and that it doesn't indicate the show is being readied for discontinuance.

I watched the broadcast version of episode 5 last night, and later decided to watch it on my new Season 4 DVD set. I was very surprised to note 2 instances when lines had been cut out. Specifically, lines belonging to Mrs. Patmore and Lady Rose. I double checked today, and the lines were included in the online version. There could be more editing I didn't catch, and I've no idea if this has been done with the other episodes on the DVD, or on DVD's of past seasons. In any case, it's not a pleasant surprise. It states on the cover, "Original UK Edition", and it clearly is not.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece: Downton Abbey Season 4 DVD (U.K. Edition):

I got Seasons 1 and 2 for a Christmas Gift. I bought Season 3 and Season 4 because 1 and 2 were so good.

Unlike other shows that start to lose their intrigue after so many seasons, Downton Abbey continues to hold my attention.

Even though Season 5 is currently running, I'm going to buy the DVD so I don't have to wait each week for the next episode!!

As always, Downton Abbey continues to enthrall us with its complex and fascinating story. Each season reveals more about each character in the ongoing saga and it is a treat indeed to be able to watch and absorb as each person changes and grows.
