Less known (to me)themes of Grecian antiquity were emphasized,such as the reasons for war and the tactical nuances of armor. Helen was beautifully presented, appropriately by the lady archeologist, who impresses with the richness of her detail and site descriptions. Including the part on ancient Greek weapons was particularly entertaining, as local delivery horses were enlisted with the doubtful permission of the owners to pull the chariots. I was inspired to wonder about Bronze Age women, not as strong Amazons, but as valued beauties practiced in the art of submission to a man's cruel whims, giving the warrior grunt a sultan's rewards in control and satisfaction. I didn't think of this before. Ancient thinking!

This documentary presents a good overview of life in the Late Bronze Age Aegean, with a focus on the culture of elites. There are interviews with experts on Bronze Age weapons and combat, dress, and food. The presenter discusses the status of elite women and queens, as well as Homer's perspective on women, sex, and war in writing the Iliad, and for once there is an emphasis on archaeological evidence rather than only texts.

My wife and I did not enjoy this version of the story of Helen of Troy. We disagreed with much of what was presented. The stated intention of the presentation was to clarify the difference between history and myth regarding Helen. We did not feel that was accomplished at any very new or interesting depth. Too much of the film was taken up with what the industry calls 'filler,' getting from one place to another at a pace that is supposed to keep the commentary engaging, lively but in this case seemed only to serve to stretch the presentation to the length required. -- Norm & Ruth
