At the outset of the American Civil War, Loreta Janeta Velazquez, an educated Cuban born teenager, fought as an officer in the battle of First Bull Run, was wounded at Shiloh, and served as a secret agent for the Confederacy. By 1863, Velazquez was spying for the Union. She chafed against the gender and race restrictions of her time, and her 1876 memoir, A Woman in Battle, caused a sensation.

Inspirational, well-crafted, historical

Comments about PBS Rebel: Loreta Velazquez, Secret Soldier of the American Civil War DVD:

This is a truly incredible film. I have watched both the festival version and the television version. It is a thorough assessment of something very absent from popular knowledge--the participation of women during the Civil War, and it focuses on a Latina trailblazer, no less! Loreta Velazquez is an incredible historical figure, and this film is destined to make her an icon for many. The most incredible thing is the filmmaker was able to construct an image of a woman whose face we will never know. Haunting, beautiful, and patriotic in a non-conventional way.

Comments about PBS Rebel: Loreta Velazquez, Secret Soldier of the American Civil War DVD:

A complicated and nuanced story which opens a whole different perspective on the Civil War. I very much enjoyed it, and I think you will too. Valazquez was a remarkable woman, far ahead of her time.

Women Civil War Soldiers? And a Latina?!

Comments about PBS Rebel: Loreta Velazquez, Secret Soldier of the American Civil War DVD:

This film took my understanding of the Civil War to new heights. While I knew of some women fighting undercover as men, I had no idea to what extent. Nor did I ever imagine a Latina with such a rich history would be a part of this American formative chapter. Without this film, I dare say Loreta Velazquez's story would have been lost. What an excellent revisitation of the Civil War and introduction to one of its unsung sheroes.

About time someone creates such a captivating piece of Art. I feel this movie moved me. I am amazed of how her story was told. The actors, the storyline, the direction, the music and the production, it's just powerful. Every middle / high school student, teacher as well as administrators should see this film.

Comments about PBS Rebel: Loreta Velazquez, Secret Soldier of the American Civil War DVD:

This film takes you back in time to see how the amazing life of Loreta Velazquez unfolds in relation to the Civil War. This really brings the time period to life. Through her story and the questions it leaves us with, the documentary encourages us viewers to ponder how and why parts of her story were/are contested, and to think about how history gets written. I loved this video and recommend it most highly!
