During the oppressive days of World War II, the Nazis established a unique ghetto/ concentration camp known as Terezín to perpetuate an elaborate scheme to deceive the world into believing that they were treating prisoners humanely. Defiant Requiem is a feature-length documentary film which illuminates the extraordinary, untold story of the brave acts of resistance by the Jewish prisoners at Terezín.

The Power of Music in Terezin

By Sol the Holocaust Historian

Comments about PBS Defiant Requiem DVD:

This documentary is a must for Holocaust educators! In the midst of the hell that was Terezin, and under the very noses of the Nazis, a group of musicians perform Verdi's requiem as an excellent example of non-violent resistance and to lift the spirits of the prisoners of Terezin. A superb documentary!

Comments about PBS Defiant Requiem DVD:

For everyone who is touched by music, this will cut deeply. I couldn't help but think of Elgar: "There is music in the midst of desolation and a glory that shines upon our tears".

Amazing

Comments about PBS Defiant Requiem DVD:

I have been singing as a volunteer for the past 20 years in a chorale that sings many of the major masterworks such as Mozart, Bach, Berlioz and many others. We rehearse once a week for 3 hours and over 3 month time before a performance. Most of us have sung Latin for many, many years and many requiems and never have had to memorize them and would not be able to! I am in awe of these incredible people learning this difficult piece of music and the language and understand the translation under such horrific conditions. What amazing people...absolutely amazing. May they all rest in peace.

Powerful & inspiring

By Dawn

from Orlando, FL

Comments about PBS Defiant Requiem DVD:

This is an amazing story of vision, inspiration, and the determination to help others hold on to their humanity in a place and time that dehumanized them and murdered them. The story, laced with survivors' accounts of being part of the Requiem and what it meant for them was deeply moving and inspiring.
