In 1892, celebrated Czech composer Antonin Dvorak arrived in America for a 3-year stay as the first director of the National Conservatory of Music. Using his unpublished letters, period photographs and journalistic accounts, and commentary by modern experts, Dvorak and America paints a fascinating picture of Dvorak and New York during the late 19th century. Features the music of Dvorak and Bedrich Smetana, performed by the Czech Philharmonic.

Comments about PBS Dvorak and America DVD:

This was a good attempt to show the life & thoughts of Antonin Dvorak. If for a music class it would move too slow to keep attention on some parts, but favorite sections or music could be cued to show to a class.

Comments about PBS Dvorak and America DVD:

This film was a great surprise. If you thought Dvorak only wrote the New World Symphony in America, and nothing else, this will be a shock. I bought this because I was interested in the symphony, but I didn't expect this fascinating lesson in Black history. Totally unexpected. Get it.
