A Little Closer, But...

Comments about PBS Dangerous Edge: A Life of Graham Greene DVD:

3.5 stars. Any attempt to describe and analyze Greene's long, complex life and work in 90 minutes is doomed. All one can hope is to grow a little nearer the man and perhaps enjoy a modest illumination of a title or two. This well-meant film does both, and very handsomely, in rare images and splendid multiple narrations. Ultimately, however, Greene would have us read his words for any deeper insights, and you recognize he's quite correct; still we'll try, as here, to understand a man who lived life almost like a spy, and who burned more bridges than most to make sure we'd never find out the reasons.
