by Hollywood writers.
I have always enjoy spy and mystery stories.
Surprise I couldn't find "A Perfect Spy" by
John Le Carre in your listing anymore.

For those who only saw this series without commentary, the original
series on "Mystery" with Vncent Price" as host, gave a great deal of
background. Reilly was an actual spy for the British, or whomever he could profit from. He is not lovable, but this is more history than mystery. Look at all the characters we once revered until the real history about them came out years later! He was involved in so many serious world shattering events in the first decades of the 20thC. He had a love/hate relationship with the British and Naval Intelligence plotters. Dueling with "The Merchant of Death", Zaharov, the munitions dealer, helping the Japanese destroy the Russian fleet at Pt. Arthur, getting the surveys to the Persian Gulf oil fields into British hands. That was the ,the start of BP,.and subsequent colonizing and/or creating a sphere of influence for the Brits in the Mideast. He was involved in sabotage and
WWI weaponry, the Russian Revolution, and Stalin and with the White Russians in the aftermath. Incredible stuff verified by British diplomat,Robin Lockhart, who knew Reilly. Lockhart not only wrote "Reilly, Ace of Spies," but a second book, "Reilly, The First Man," in which he speculates that Reilly was not killed by the Chekka, (early KGB) but joined them as well ! Sam Neill was absolutely the best for the role! It's said that Ian Fleming modeled James Bond after Reilly.

I wish PBS would come out with the Vincent Price "Mystery" series, with all the commentary .. or a companion book.

Had forgotten how dastardly Reilly was. This spy story was a poor choice for me, as I found nothing sympathetic in this sleazy character.

If for that alone, this is such an incredible story. Reilly does his thing and changes the world by getting the British the surveys of the oil fields in the Persian Gulf, at the time in history when the navies of the world are rushing to switch from steam to oil driven fleets. All of the episodes are based on history. Sam Neill is outstanding!
