The average American family today carries 10 credit cards. Credit card debt and personal bankruptcies are now at an all time high. With no legal limit on the amount of interest or fees that can be charged, credit cards have become the most profitable sector of the American banking industry: more than $30 billion in profits last year alone. FRONTLINE examines how the credit card industry became so pervasive, so lucrative, and so powerful.

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: Secret History of the Credit Card DVD:

Outstanding, revealing inside look at the unimaginable greed and deceptive, often downright unlawful practices of this sector of the financial services industry. Thanks to Frontline for exposing the dark side of the everyday world of credit card use and debt. This outrageous practice MUST be at least partially responsible for our current (Fall 2008) economic crisis. And now these greedmongers want US to rescue THEM. Frontline's documentary here, with all of the abuses it exposes, should be used as an example of what the government on behalf of its citizens will NOT allow these financial institutions to get away with any longer, nor ever again.
