Comments about PBS Richard Lavoie: How Difficult Can This Be? F.A.T. City--A Learning Disabilities Workshop DVD:
As a mother of 2 LD children, one of which got no help from the education system, and one that got help up to high school. I am hoping this DVD helps his teachers understand that blaming a person for having a learning disability is wrong, and in order to teach a child with a LD they need to understand the LD. Too many kids today are being cheated out of their educations, or being subjected to in class torture and demoralization, because our education systems don't require teachers to take any type of LD course before they begin teaching.

This is the best source I have found for explaining learning disabilities to people without them.
I think I have an undiagnosed LD and when I watched this video in college, I was actually brought to tears by how Lavoie made living with an LD understandable for people who do not have one. His approach really puts the viewer into the student's shoes. People who have never experienced the frustration first hand will see what it is like for a student with an LD in a classroom setting. This is an excellent source for teaching or learning about LDs!
I'm reviewing this video as a person who has dealt with the frustration personally and has watched my brother struggle through almost 20 years of schooling because he is still learning to overcome a diagnosed learning disability.

Fantastic insightful footage on stepping into the shoes of the child with learning difficulties. All teachers should be made to view these dvds. Amazing, frank and empathetic.

As a professor of special education, I have shown this video to preservice and inservice teachers for years, and it never fails to impress. Students talk about it for the rest of the semester, and hopefully take the ideas and suggestions with them into their teaching.

Didn't purchase but seen this during a parent orientation for my daughter receiving dyslexia assistance. TEACHERS need to see this and be educated on teaching children with learning differences because they ARE NOT disabled; they can learn. Simple, non time consuming adjustments in the classroom make a little difference for the child.
