How did Jesus of Nazareth become the Christ of the Christian tradition? And why did the early Christian communities develop different theological images of Jesus? In her exciting book, Paula Fredriksen answers these questions by placing the various canonical images of Jesus within their historical contexts. FRONTLINE discusses Jesus' ministry, the circumstances of his crucifixion, and social and religious problems facing early churches.

What is perhaps one of the most difficult histories to assemble presented with incredible accuracy. So much of early Christian history must be "reconstructed" due to the complete absence of any real evidence. Most early Christian histories are really just modern interpretations, which as a result, introduce the bias of their authors. The stellar cast of scholars and historians possess an encyclopedic knowledge of all the available writings. They combine that knowledge with what actual evidence we have and the recent archaeological evidence. The result is the most careful, complete and unbiased history of the early Christians.

I reviewed this once before, but I'm being asked to review it again. I originally purchased this on VHS. It is so good that I wanted to update and have it on DVD. Also have the book. Both are deserving five stars.

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians DVD:

I love this documentary it was filled with interesting and informative information. I hope that anyone or everyone whomever they are will at least get to see this film. I am a converted Catholic but a full Christian that tries to love my enemies as Christ says. Sometimes you don't understand why you go beyond your convictions and do something so radical as to change your opinions on a person but knowing that you do not have all the information as I believe that God does makes are judgments a little or somewhat inept. I don't believe that I deserve the blessings that I have but I can try to be thankful for them. I am no angel. I get mad. I judge, but let me always repent and I think with the help of our Lord, I will, if not be one step closure to God, than one less step away.
