How did Jesus of Nazareth become the Christ of the Christian tradition? And why did the early Christian communities develop different theological images of Jesus? In her exciting book, Paula Fredriksen answers these questions by placing the various canonical images of Jesus within their historical contexts. FRONTLINE discusses Jesus' ministry, the circumstances of his crucifixion, and social and religious problems facing early churches.

I first purchased this when it was available as a VHS tape and the book. Great! When it became available on DVD, I purchased it agin. It was in "full" which on the modern wide screen is a small picture. Fine on the old televisions which aren't sold anymore. I saw it broadcast again recently and it was broadcast for the modern televisions. The picture was great so I ordered it again for the wider screen. They sent a "full" which I already have. I have to send it back. The catalog doesn't say what it is. I ordered it by telephone so I could ask but the woman taking the order didn't know and that information wasn't available to her. If you want the widescreen....I'd wait until it's available if it ever becomes available. The widescreen is wonderful. I wouldn't order it unless it is the widescreen. The difference is like day and night. It's television so vision is a big part of it. The information is fantastic.

I watched Part I again this December; this is always one of my favorite programs to watch during the Christmas season. Part I was broadcast on my local PBS station in widescreen format, but Part II seems to be available only in "full screen" (pan & scan). I already own the Full Screen DVD, but I'd love to have the program in widescreen. Is widescreen available for both parts? Please help!

Review of Jesus to Christ

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians DVD:

This is an excellent DVD of the Front Line program ( actually copy) which I find best to first view, then read the book. The book is complicated and the viewing first makes it a lot easier to read and comprehend.

Thanks for the unfolding information....

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians DVD:

Hello,
Have been looking at the 4 hour series "From Jesus to Christ".
I have found it very thoughtfully done, with the background of archaeologic and both old and new testament references, and the circumspect scholarly perspective giving the continually unfolding history of the Christian faith to better understand the foundations and illuminates/adds to traditional biblical understanding and teaching. Certainly, this is not to say all dogma is erased,
but light does areas into which had darkness.
As the Lenten Season approaches it make me wonder if the academics had put together a study guide, that might make this a useful tool for Lenten Bible Study or Christian Ed Classes. I realize use beyond personal use (i.e. small group or church type presentations) is not usually part of the purchase terms, but wondered if a booklet/study guide had been part of your original intention? Actually, I better go look in your product listings... but will sent this anyway as I suspect such will not be there.

Smartly done, this takes a historical and sociological view

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians DVD:

I stumbled upon this about 10 minutes into it. IT IS FASCINATING! Bible scholars reveal what is known about the culture that surrounded Jesus and reveal many things you might not have considered. This is not controversial. It takes a straightforward approach to explaining the Roman empire and the Jewish faith at the time of Jesus' preaching. Thorough! Extremely interesting! Thought provoking! Guaranteed to captivate!

Very interesting and much food for thought. I would have liked a bit more comment on Jesus relationship with the women following his ministry. Or comment on Mary his mothers' forgetfulness of Jesus as being Christ and not just her son.
