How did Jesus of Nazareth become the Christ of the Christian tradition? And why did the early Christian communities develop different theological images of Jesus? In her exciting book, Paula Fredriksen answers these questions by placing the various canonical images of Jesus within their historical contexts. FRONTLINE discusses Jesus' ministry, the circumstances of his crucifixion, and social and religious problems facing early churches.

I first purchased this when it was available as a VHS tape and the book. Great! When it became available on DVD, I purchased it agin. It was in "full" which on the modern wide screen is a small picture. Fine on the old televisions which aren't sold anymore. I saw it broadcast again recently and it was broadcast for the modern televisions. The picture was great so I ordered it again for the wider screen. They sent a "full" which I already have. I have to send it back. The catalog doesn't say what it is. I ordered it by telephone so I could ask but the woman taking the order didn't know and that information wasn't available to her. If you want the widescreen....I'd wait until it's available if it ever becomes available. The widescreen is wonderful. I wouldn't order it unless it is the widescreen. The difference is like day and night. It's television so vision is a big part of it. The information is fantastic.

A remarkably thoughtful presentation

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians DVD:

This 1998 production attempts to recreate the life and times of Jesus, based on well-known Biblical references and, perhaps more importantly, extra-Biblical archeological data from multiple scientific interpretations. Even though the information is 16 years old, the interpreted data is 20 centuries older- as the information is presented, one can easily imagine life in those times. While newer findings have corroborated and amplified almost all of the data and opinions presented here, I would certainly enjoy an updated version that included the significant data returned by those more recent archeological studies.

History, Geography and Development

Comments about PBS FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians DVD:

When I first saw notice of this Frontline program on Christianity I half-committed to viewing it and just happened to be free when the program aired. The History, Geography and Development of the Christian movement was one of the best combinations of these three approaches to understanding when and how the many players brought us this Religion. I intend to view it again with a German friend as we often share feelings about belief morality and behavior.
I also want to have my daughters view this presentation as they have been raised in a very open manner regarding religion. Each daughter has children and must face the same questions of how to pass on to these children a guide to believing with a wonderful perspective.
