Filmmaker Byron Hurt looks at the past and future of soul food -- from its roots in Western Africa, to its incarnation in the American South, to its contribution to modern health crises in communities of color. Soul Food Junkies also looks at the socioeconomics of the modern American diet, and how the food industry profits from making calories cheap, but healthy options expensive and hard to find.

A Film for Posterity!

Comments about PBS Soul Food Junkies DVD:

Thank you Mr. Hurt. I have been waiting for a movie like this for a long time! I fell in love with this film by the 10 minute mark! My husband and I were overwhelmed with pride and emotion just viewing the beautiful faces of the subjects--old and young--many of who looked so much like us or our relatives with their beautiful, radiant faces, smiles, and juicy cheeks!

Mr. Hurt's film touched me deeply. This film goes way beyond food and health for me. It is a celebration of my heritage and legacy of my origins from Africa-America. With so many disparate views of what it means to be of African descent in America, it is my hope that quality films like this will have folks talking and feeling good about blackness for a long time to come. We were so moved that we are planning a 'parlor party' for a group of our friends to view and dialog about it.

The only thing extra that I would have appreciated is some sort of companion site with ideas on how to discuss this topic with groups. Very powerful, moving, and well-executed.

Comments about PBS Soul Food Junkies DVD:

A sleepless night viewing has brought me to my computer to order this profound TV film. To better understand respective food needs, I plan for my mixed race family to watch Byron Hurt's sensitive, informative production when we are vacationing together next month. It has changed my menu for my share-day to cook.

Touches your heart as well as your soul!

Comments about PBS Soul Food Junkies DVD:

Food for the heart as well as the soul is not always healthy - for anybody. If you are of African descent, this film will minister to both as we discover the reasons "soul food" became the food of choice for African families.
But more than that,Byron Hurt shares the wonderful story of his Daddy, who struggled with an "addiction" to soul food. Byron also shows many positive examples of people who are changing generational patterns of eating and discovering a new life! A story for all cultures and such a delicious film! Thank you!
