Filmmaker Byron Hurt looks at the past and future of soul food -- from its roots in Western Africa, to its incarnation in the American South, to its contribution to modern health crises in communities of color. Soul Food Junkies also looks at the socioeconomics of the modern American diet, and how the food industry profits from making calories cheap, but healthy options expensive and hard to find.

Comments about PBS Soul Food Junkies DVD:

I so enjoyed it I shared it with my women's group at church....and it really was an eye opener. I also gave it to my son....who loves to cook soul food. Very helpful and inspiring. Thanks for this story.

Comments about PBS Soul Food Junkies DVD:

Food for the heart as well as the soul is not always healthy - for anybody. If you are of African descent, this film will minister to both as we discover the reasons "soul food" became the food of choice for African families.
But more than that,Byron Hurt shares the wonderful story of his Daddy, who struggled with an "addiction" to soul food. Byron also shows many positive examples of people who are changing generational patterns of eating and discovering a new life! A story for all cultures and such a delicious film! Thank you!
