Over 60,000 years ago, the first modern humans left their African homeland and entered Europe, then a bleak and inhospitable continent in the grip of the Ice Age. But when they arrived, they were not alone: the stocky, powerfully built Neanderthals had already been living there for hundreds of thousands of years. So what happened when the first modern humans encountered the Neanderthals? Did they make love or war?

Comments about PBS NOVA: Decoding Neanderthals DVD:

Wonderful news that the Neanderthals were more advanced than we thought, especially since they are finding those genes in us now. There is newer info on this subject, but this is a great way to catch up on the research most of the way to the present.

Comments about PBS NOVA: Decoding Neanderthals DVD:

Everything I wanted to know (thought I knew but didn't) about the blending of the two species of humans. Nice to know where we came from.

Fascinating and educational

Comments about PBS NOVA: Decoding Neanderthals DVD:

I learned a lot from this film, which was interestingly presented. At times, the presentation was a little slow, but I am thinking that because of the slightly slowed filming, I was able to take in more information that if the production raced by. I certainly recommended this DVD to school children.

Very good

Comments about PBS NOVA: Decoding Neanderthals DVD:

A very good documentary,my only minor issue with this documentary is that FIRST modern humans that migrated out of Africa (who would have encountered Neanderthals) would have presumably had African features and skin color. The producers of the video chose to make them look like white Europeans.
