The abolitionists tore the nation apart in order to create a more perfect union. Men and women, black and white, Northerners and Southerners, poor and wealthy--these passionate anti-slavery activists fought body and soul in the most important civil rights crusade in American history. What began as a pacifist movement fueled by persuasion and prayer became a fiery and furious struggle that forever changed the nation.

Historic figures come to life.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The Abolitionists DVD:

The DVD brings history to life. It makes historic figures into "real" people that today's children and adults can identify with not just a name to memorize for a test. Too often history is viewed as a boring subject. Programs like this not only help to explain the ideology behind certain events, but help to bring names in history books to life.

Comments about PBS American Experience: The Abolitionists DVD:

I thought the program was very informative and beautifully shot. Performances were well done and captured the period and qualities of those focused on and the shameful period in our country's history. An important program and educational tool, which I would encourage all educators and citizens to partake of to appreciate the progress that's been made and the work that needs to continue for the betterment of all cultures and societies.
