In the summer of 1789, James Madison penned sixteen words in spare prose that become the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Herein the founding fathers of a young government pledge separation of church and state, thus guaranteeing religious freedom for its citizens and establishing a free marketplace for religion in the United States.

How enlightening!

Comments about PBS First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty DVD:

I join other reviewers to give this movie 5 stars. Very enlightening. Deeply touching to see how the founding fathers, though very mindful of God and who were Christians, yet firmly kept religion out of the running of the government. Though I wonder, if Jefferson had lost the election to Adams, would things have been different! That was a close call. Anyhow I have ordered the book rather than the DVD as I want to leisurely get more details. I want the information to counter those who claim that the USA is a "Christian nation."

The battle continues

Comments about PBS First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty DVD:

I can remember being asked to say a prayer for a high school meeting. I said no and the teacher said you are going to say it. Then my friend said he would say the prayer. The teacher backed away because his prayer would be different because he was from a different faith. The only way this works is for religion and government to not mix. It is what made the United States the most religious country on the earth. You carry your religious convictions into the public square but they have to be yours and you should not impose them on others.

Comments about PBS First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty DVD:

Every student in the United States should view this program to enrich their knowledge about the formation of the United States. It would be wonderful for those who are applying for American citizenship as well. Perhaps the present members of Congress would benefit from the compromise lessons of our founders! Very well done, clearly and logically presented!

Comments about PBS First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty DVD:

This is one of the most moving and memorable movies I have seen. I am ordering the DVD immediately. If my children have not seen it, I will lend them my copy and ask that they return it after watching it. If this copy still exists when I die, I intend that it be given to a public library or some other institution that will make it freely available to any who want to better understand the value of religious freedom and how it came to exist.
