This film explores the dramatic and little-known events that unfolded inside a nuclear-armed Soviet submarine during the Cuban Missile Crisis. While politicians sought a solution to the stand-off, Vasili Arkhipov, an officer aboard the submarine, refused to fire a nuclear torpedo, thus averting disaster. The program combines tense drama with eyewitness accounts and expert testimony about a critical event during the Cold War.

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: The Man Who Saved the World DVD:

I was a college senior 50 miles from Barksdale AFB, which we knew was one of the top 25 strategic nuclear targets in the US. we stockpiled food and water, attended nightly mandatory convocations tolearn emergency roles and held our collective breath. I had not known this story before. Just thought The Man was JFK.

Just When You Think You Knew The Story

By AstroManUS

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: The Man Who Saved the World DVD:

When I saw this episode on my local PBS station last year, it floored me that I had not heard about this story. Talk about the fog of war writ large. Kennedy would have had no choice but to retaliate if the captain had launched. The future of the world turned on one Soviet submarine, and someone having a cool head in a hot sub.

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: The Man Who Saved the World DVD:

Having lived through this time period was scary enough, learning how close we came to World War 3 was really breath taking. This story is something I plan on using with my high school history class.

The Very Wise & Cool Man : Vasili Arkhip

Comments about PBS Secrets of the Dead: The Man Who Saved the World DVD:

I have watched ths programe on TV, Australia. It's thrilling me. I sat at the edge of my chair. They were given full authority frm Moscow to defend themself if they were cornered/ lost contact wth Moscow. They've been hiding under the sea from the US Navy bombardment for couple days untill they almost run out of air. His righthand man & other pushed him to blast the nuke to the US.
In the height of the dispute/ argumen he refused it. He said ths matter can be solved wisely. War is not the answer to solve ths matter. For the US it's a victory over Moscow and for Moscow it's an embarassement. He didn't get apreciation from Moscow. He's an embaressment for Rusia. Hwvr, for me he's really a cool man, a gentleman. He's a very wise man. May God bless him & accept him that he can rest in peace.
