Its title comes from a Navajo proverb, and COYOTE WAITS carries all the supernatural suspense for which Tony Hillerman's novels are famous. Officer Jim Chee is convinced that a drunken Navajo shaman, Ashie Pinto, killed a fellow officer. Pinto won't deny it, but a kinswoman believes he is innocent, and her persistence drives Chee and Lieutenant Leaphorn deeper into puzzling mystery, with each new death. Who--or what--is behind it all?

Very good movie. This completed the trilogy of Tony Hillerman stories made into movies. The price here on PBS was much more reasonable than other sources. I should have gotten all three from here.
The story does a lot to help to understand Native culture and it's relationship to modern life in the US, as do the first two movies, Skinwalkers and A Thief of Time.

Love Tony Hillerman's novels as I enjoy his well researched stories and learning about the history and cultural beliefs of the Southwest tribes. I have two other movies based on his books; this one fell short in that unless one has read the book it would be hard to follow the movie line. Also, the scene where Lt. Leaphorn is looking out with his dark glasses the moment was ruined as the movie camera is reflected in his lens. Come on now... Mr. Hillerman deserves better. The actors were well selected and did a good job in their portrayals.

The Coyote Waits Expectantly

Comments about PBS Mystery!: Coyote Waits: An American Mystery Special DVD:

The late Tony Hillerman's mystery novels set in the four-corners area of the Southwest are among my favorite mysteries. Hillerman had a spare way with language as spare yet colorful as the country and peoples he described. He drew strong plots, vivid characters, and a deep undercurrent of love for the native American peoples who made up the focus of his stories. Through all of them runs a significant absence of violence; despite the murder(s) around which the plots focus, retribution comes by the outworking of natural forces rather than the quickness of the tribal policemen's weapons. "Coyote Waits" is one of my favorite Hillerman novels.
I was curious how a TV drama would capture Hillerman's telling of this morality tale. This "American Mystery Special" production does a fine job of capturing the plot, the setting, and the general shape of the characters. The visual setting, in particular, is especially gripping, even to one who has actually seen the four corners a number of times and doesn't have to imagine it. The characters are well acted and usually seem to resonate with the novel's characters.
I do have a couple of quibbles, however. The Janet Peete character is plotted in the film as a Navajo attorney; in the book she's Anglo. That changes the force of Jim Chee's concern to please her from the more complicated relationship of the book with the questions it raises for Chee to a much simpler one in the film. I also found the Joe Leaphorn character in the film to be less like the one in the book than I expected - more intense and pressing, quicker with a gun, so to speak.
Quibbles aside, I found this an attractive representation of Coyote Waits.

Comments about PBS Mystery!: Coyote Waits: An American Mystery Special DVD:

This is very well done TV mystery. All of the location shots in the American southwest add greatly to the story. Hillerman's story brings out the culture of modern Native Americans and their connections to their traditions.

I highly recommend this video.

Very satisfied with product. Have read all the Hillerman books. Found the movie lived up to the book. Interesting characters and spectacular scenery. Worth watching if only for the views of the Arizona mesas.

Comments about PBS Mystery!: Coyote Waits: An American Mystery Special DVD:

For me, the most interesting part of "Coyote Waits" is the allusion to, in this case, the Navajo culture that could be further explored such as the title and to whom one was permitted to speak within the Clan structure. also, the stunning images of this southwestern landscape illustrate what Hillerman has so deftly woven together in the ideas of regard for the Earth and personal ethics.
