THE MANOR HOUSE takes a fascinating look at the grand British class system of the early 1900s. Resembling prior cultural-reality series THE 1900 HOUSE and FRONTIER HOUSE, this unique series includes three distinct classes: aristocratic family, upper servants, and lower servants, who must act according to etiquette, not just the rigors or technical realities of the time. Nineteen contemporary Britons were selected from 8,000 applicants.

I purchased this item b/c it was on sale and my family was interested in the 'time-travel' experiences. This one was pretty interesting as it did help me(41) and my family (ages 12,15,18,43) understand a lot about the social-economic classes and their duties in a house of this magnitude. It is sad, though, that many of our 20th century counter-parts are so unwilling, when they asked to be in this experience, to do the duties as described. It brings to light, just how spoiled "we" are. The people that did 'fill the positions' and worked as closely to the duties as asked, helped us, as an audience see the hardships that they went through. Bravos to the House Butler and the House Maid. Honorable mentions to the last scullery girl for sticking it out. However, shocked at what she did on the last day, before going home. My family and I enjoyed this DVD. (Some parts we had to ask our two youngest to leave or turn their heads)

The description of the video does not clarlly state it is not a "story" of the Manor House but of what each volunteer discovers, and of how each one reacts about the role they would have played had they lived in that period as servants. In a word, I was disappointed to me. I did give it a three star rating because the acting of each player was very good.

Comments about PBS House: Manor House DVD 3PK:

Loved this series so much the first time that I had to buy it! I wish more time was spent on actual logistics of the time period (cooking , baking , cleaning, pass times , bathing etc etc ) and less time on relationships and feelings. But that's okay, the butler made up for that.

Comments about PBS House: Manor House DVD 3PK:

I am so glad that i made this purchase. It showed my children what it was really like to life in that time period. How the people today are not made of what they use to be made of. People were honored by duty no mater what it was it also showed the difference in classes of yesterday. People of today are NOT made the same. Timeless!

Comments about PBS House: Manor House DVD 3PK:

I absolutely adore this program. If you like reality shows and history, especially Victorian and Edwardian history, you'll like this. I've always been fascinated by class, servants/masters, and things of the nature, and this was a really fresh look into the time. It is a reality show, yes, but there's quite a lot to be learned along with the people participating. It's just a really great program.
