The most notable expedition in U.S. history was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, with soldiers, an African-American slave, a female guide, and Canadian boatmen. Ken Burns' LEWIS & CLARK re-creates the 1803 journey to locate the Northwest Passage. The explorers found a varied landscape and a dizzying diversity of Indian peoples.

I grew up in St.Louis and learned about Lewis & Clark early in my school years, so their travels were "old hat" and of no particular interest to me. I figured I had heard it all before. When Ken Burns came out with LEWIS & CLARK: THE JOURNEY... I figured I'd have a look just because it was a Ken Burns special, but I was hooked after the first episode!! I couldn't wait for the next and then the next, etc. What a documentary!! Why didn't my fifth grade teacher teach us like that? I might have enjoyed American History more than I did.

When Ken Burns shows you the only remaining evidence of the journey, the inscription on Pompeys Pillar, he shows the inscription mockup that was in the visitor's center at that time, not the real thing. I don't know why because the inscription is very clear. Maybe it was a mixup in editing. Look at the J-u portion of July on what he shows compared to the real thing. The only evidence of the expedition still remaining on the trail and he doesn't show it! He shows the imitation.

Comments about PBS Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery DVD:

As always, Ken Burns' film on the Lewis & Clark, Corp of Discovery epic expedition is fantastic! I am quite a fan of L&C Expedition and Burns portrays it to a "T." For anyone with a little adventure in his/her soul this is a must.

Sloppy research

Comments about PBS Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery DVD:

The Lewis and Clark Expedition neither started nor ended in Saint Louis. That distinction belongs to St. Charles, Missouri, a city in current St. Louis County, but at that time too far away to be considered a suburb of St. Louis.
There is scant mention of the French in the area and also of the French boatman -who were natives of the area and NOT Canadian's-- who also made the journey. Lewis and Clark are fawned over as exceptional heroes. It is an exercise in typical Anglo-American history based myopia. Don't waste your time or money on this DVD set.

Comments about PBS Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery DVD:

I saw this series some years back when it was broadcast on PBS and thought it was wonderful. I bought it and watched it again last week and was not disappointed. What Ken Burns can do with narrative voices, still pictures and landscapes, and evocative music is really great. And what an amazing piece of history the Lewis and Clark expedition was! A turning point for the United States, and also, in a sadder way, for the native Americans and for the unspoiled wilderness they inhabited.

Comments about PBS Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery DVD:

I truly enjoyed and felt the I learned something of value, having seen Lewis & Clark : The Journey of the Corps of Discovery by Ken Burns. We homeschool our children so this DVD set was a great tool in the educational arsenal. The twins are 12 and really enjoyed what they learned and are watching it a second time by their own choice to write a report about what they learned. Thanks Ken Burns and PBS for making this DVD available and affordable. I highly recommend this for the whole family to enjoy.
