From award-winning film-maker David Grubin, this miniseries weaves together the troubled lives of a dirt-farmer's son and a wealthy Southern slave-owner's daughter. Together, Abraham and Mary Lincoln ascended to the pinnacle of power at the most difficult time in the nation's history, the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln's legacy as the Great Emancipator reshaped the nation while his tragic death left Mary reclusive and forgotten.

Say what you want to say about me but Abe & Mary have become a part of my heart because these people were so real in their lives and in their story. They didn't pretend to be tough; they broke down but then they rose up again and again. I have watched my vhs pbs copied version more times than I want to guess. The voice of David is like that of a kind father telling a bedtime story, very calming. So, I've worn my vhs copy out and will be happy to buy this DVD PACK.

YOU SEE, I found a treasure in watching this documentary, I found Mary Todd Lincoln, a woman, in life, in tragedy, in suffocating tragedy, young, a mother who lost most of her children and a wife who was sitting next to her husband when somebody shot him; her husband's brain and blood were splattered over the bodice of her dress, her face and hair. "Oh Mary, Oh Mary, Don't You Weep," did they say that to her? Or, did they say, "Stay strong for us Mary, we need you to be strong as the First Lady and mother of our country." I was left with the soul searching question: JUST HOW STRONG CAN ONE WOMAN BE--just how strong should she pretend to be?

Well, President Lincoln told Mary, "Mother, see yonder building..." he was talking about an asylum and he was telling her if she could not get a grip on her grief, after losing one child then another then another, with only one left and that was the one who eventually put her into a facility that Mary had to escape from. He was a young lawyer, he wanted a life and his family was all dead except for his mother and she wanted to stop her life and rest and grieve profusely, unendingly. This son decided to step out on his own and embrace his life, not the deaths and bereavements that had already occurred. Mary and her son did not adjoin before she died.

I WANT MARY TODD LINCOLN vindicated. I want Mary to stand for the woman who cannot take anymore and stops to rest but finds that life goes on, and finds that as she lives, you cannot afford to stop and rest for long. This is a good example for all women. I feel strengthened by Mary Todd Lincoln. I feel I know something real about something that is truly life. I get the lesson from her life. I am sure it will help me. I was doing research for a book project about a woman, a mother of five, who behaved like Mary when she lost her children but they were alive, she just couldn't find them; they were all grown up. She could not communicate with them and she responded grievously in despair. Her children said to her (something like) "See Mother, see yonder building..."
THANKS MARY AND ABE FOR ALL THAT YOU DO: YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW.

As a life-long student of Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and their descendants, I found this to be inaccurate in its portrayal of Mrs. Lincoln and her relationship with her husband. One wonders how much research was done before writing and production, and also whether those who created it are misogynists.
Very disappointing to see this kind of error spread in this day and age by the admired and respected American Experience.
