I have not read the book, but I found the film's story(ies) quite intriguing and well depicted. I believe the movie serves very well our understanding of various human behaviors. The Way We Live Now could be a timeless classic.
I would especially recommend this if you enjoy dramas of the lives of gentlemen and ladies in 19th century Britain. The screenplay is by Andrew Davies, which might say enough to some people.

I have seen this movie several times and never cease to be amused by Matthew Macfadyen's portrayal of young Felix, a baronet, who has already gambled away his inheritance. He cajoles money from his mother, a trash novelist, who must write to support her family. Felix decides his only real hope lies in winning the hand of some wealthy, unsuspecting female. David Suchet (Hercule Poirot) plays a cunning con artist come lately to London to bilk money from some of the more trusting (read, gullible) of the upper class, with an exciting railroad investment scheme. Felix focuses on this man's daughter to become his bride. Felix attempts cunning, but he is comically thwarted over and over by his own immaturity, over-confidence, stunted intellect, and over-indulgent mother. Felix's sister, much more upright and moral than he, meets the perfect man, and the two fall in love. Although a seemingly honest, moral and upright man, he harbors a secret that could destroy their happiness. Felix's mother has her own love interest, which she deserves, if only to provide her with an easier lifestyle. Her gentleman shows a great deal of caring for her; if only Felix wouldn't burst in each time the two are about to kiss!

I recommend this one to anyone to see greed at its best and worse forms. It is also very intresting character study. Well acted all round.
