Comments about PBS I, Claudius Book (Softcover):
Well, I have mixed feelings. I remember watching the first four or five installments of this celebrated series (when it was first broadcast) and then giving up. The endless treachery and lurid goings-on became tedious. I watched it all the way through this time because of my interest in ancient Rome, but it was an effort at times. Of course Derek Jacobi's performance is one of the greatest on video, in my opinion, but in the end I found the beautifully villainous Livia just too one-dimensional to be convincing, though Sian Phillip's perfomance is indelible. Brian Blessed as the famously handsome Augustus is ridiculously miscast. Much of the overall history is reasonably accurate, but viewers should beware of Robert Lowell's inventions. Livia and Augustus, in particular, should be treated with more respect. Basically, it's a soap opera. I never felt that I was watching ancient Romans, but highly accomplished British actors strutting their stuff (if not actually slumming). Recommended with reservations.
