As a theologian, I know that an understanding of the history of ancient Israel and early Christianity is vital to the interpretation of biblical texts for Bible study/sermons, etc. But part of a theologian's task is to think about how ancient texts and stories can be relevant for today.
I watched the Civilization series on OPB and was intrigued enough to want to see it again and even show it to a Bible study group sometime.
It is good history with an intersting take. I like the DVD and recommend it.

Truly interesting and thought provoking. Conservative or liberal thinkers should welcome opportunities to revisit history from various perspectives. I found Mr. Ferguson's vision informative and his format very relevant. Great introduction piece that has become the cause of many interesting conversations with friends of varying points of view.
