In the 1960s a new breed of pioneers began arriving in Oregon's Willamette Valley determined to grow Vitis vinifera, the fine wine grapes of Europe. They were told it couldn't be done and were amply warned that western Oregon was too cold and wet for vinifera to flourish. But they came anyway with a dream of producing premium wines - in particular, Pinot noir - made from the delicate red grape of Burgundy, France.

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: Oregon Wine: Grapes of Place DVD:

What a wonderful group of pioneers. We are fortunate that they acted so selflessly in setting the stage for a vibrant Oregon wine industry. The proof is in the many wonderful wines we enjoy today.

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: Oregon Wine: Grapes of Place DVD:

Far better than I expected. I was going to watch only the first few minutes and then surf. But this show was interesting from the gitgo. I always denegrated wine growers as a stuffy elitist bunch but it seems they deserve their victory after the hardships depicted. I'm going to buy a case :)

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: Oregon Wine: Grapes of Place DVD:

As a friend and supporter of Oregon winegrowers since the early 70's, I was moved and very pleased with this very complete, accurate and emotive treatment of their experience, motivation and success. They were, and still are, a unique breed of collaborative pioneers and this program does an excellent job of telling their story.
