The Dust Bowl chronicles the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, when a frenzied wheat boom on the southern Plains, followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s, nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation. Menacing black blizzards killed farmers' crops and livestock, threatened the lives of their children, and forced thousands of desperate families to pick up and move somewhere else.

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The Dust Bowl DVD:

As a teacher and an Okie living in California I look forward to using this in my high school classroom -- I sure wish there were more folks like Marc (post two below)that purchase a copy for themselves and one for their local school or teacher. Students are so visual these days and nothing helps them understand history better the a film!

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The Dust Bowl DVD:

I grew up in Elkhart, Kansas and remember the dusts storms during the 50's, as well as the stories told by my parents and grandmother of the Dirty Thirties. We owned the drugstore shown in the footage. After watching the documentary I have new respect for those who stayed. I appreciate the way Ken Burns capatured not only the desolation of the dust storms but also the way he captured the beauty of that land and it's people. The blue skies, the magnificant sunsets, the wheat, the stillness ... Viewing The Dust Bowl will allow me to always go home.

Two copies please

By Marc

from Oklahoma City, OK

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The Dust Bowl DVD:

I am buying two copies of the Dust Bowl. I didn't get to see the entire movie, so the first one is for me. The second one I will donate to a high school down the street from me in Moore, OK. I have already given them copies of THE CIVIL WAR and PROHIBITION for their history and government departments to use in teaching. Ken Burns and his crew should be congratulated. They are the best.

Ken Burns, the documentary King!

Comments about PBS Ken Burns: The Dust Bowl DVD:

Once again, Ken Burns has given us another great documentary from American history. The story was so moving and I cried through most of the show. Very touching. My father once told me when he was a little boy (he was born in 1925)he remembered seeing the rolling black dust clouds moving across the sky in Neshoba County, Mississippi. It must have been an impressive site for a small boy to remember it. It was some tough times back then.
