AMERICAN EXPERIENCE details Jesse Owens early career; describes Adolf Hitler's outsized ambitions for the 1936 Olympics; explores the movement in Western democracies to boycott the event; and explains the pressures on Owens to attend. The film also explores why, despite his success in Germany, Owens struggled to find a place for himself in a United States that was still wrestling with its own deeply entrenched racism.

Comments about PBS American Experience: Jesse Owens DVD:

This documentary accurately reveals the sentiments surrounding what it would been like to be a "[*]" from the time of his birth up until the time of his death in the United States. Many of the "colored" troops during WWII have had similar experiences. It is sad but it seems that the only way for most Americans to "Experience" and empathize with "[*]" of the 20th Century is via sports. This was excellent!
