Based on a new interpretation of contemporary historical events in Rome, Last Days of Jesus peels back thousands of years of tradition, to explore how dramatic political events in Rome could have played a crucial role in shaping Jesus' destiny, and to examine an extraordinary political alliance that altered the course of history.

The portrayal was thought-provoking and very plausible. I rejoice that the followers found a way to keep the dream alive. Quoting Raimon Panikkar, "The interpretation of every text requires the knowledge of its context and the intuition of its pretext." This presentation provides both, and it enhanced my interpretation of the gospel and non-gospel historical sources. Well done.

I found the film wonderful on a historical level. Too bad that Christology has been discounted from the film. With that said, the film made Jesus appear to be trying to find his way, or to make things work doesn't fit well with me as a believer in the Christ, Jesus. By discounting the parts about Jesus and focusing on the two other main characters (Herod Antipas and Lucius Aelius Sejanus) I found value in the film albeit not in spirituality. In the end, I found the film to be of worth if only viewed in context of history.

Comments about PBS Last Days of Jesus DVD:

The Gospels were written decades after the resurrection of Christ and omit the true story of Rome's involvement in Jerusalem because the Emperor Tiberius (the son of Nero, who fiddled while Rome burned) had taken a long vacation to the party island of Capri, while the acting emperor, Prefect Lucius Sejanus, was trying to destroy orthodox Jewish religious power in Galilea (until he was executed by Emperor Tiberius on a charge of killing his heirs). Tiberius had all historical references to Sejanus banned on pain of death! This is why the Bible's Gospels don't mention the facts and omit the full truth. This TV documentary simply adds the historical facts to the Bible to explain what was going on politically, thereby explaining why the Roman guards in the Temple of Jerusalem didn't arrest Jesus and his disciples when he overturned the tables of the money changers and drove out the ritual slaughter sacrifice animals with a whip! What was really going on was very simple: John the Baptist has been funded as well documented to sow the seeds of rebellion against the Jewish orthodoxy, because Rome wanted to incite a Fifth Column style religious revolution to overthrow the status quo of King Herod Antipas, the Jewish Governor of Galilea and son of Herod the Great. If Sejanus, head of the Roman Praetorian Guard, could have incited a rebellion this was and overthrown King Herod by using insurrection/guerilla Coup d'etat, instead of an invasion by Roman legions, which would have united all the Jews against Rome and caused a major war that would have been expensive and unpopular, he would have won a major victory for Rome by seizing full control of Galilea! Similarly, Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev in the cold war tried to fund socialist rebels across the world to cause revolutions in capitalist countries, particularly Eastern Europe, South America, Africa and South East Asia; the idea being to use "the enemy within" to fight guerilla wars of "liberation" in Vietnam etc.

Comments about PBS Last Days of Jesus DVD:

The production concentrates on questioning motives, timelines and the most salient issue of whether Jesus was truly the Messiah. None of the presenters seemed to be interested in communicating facts but merely supporting the hidden agenda.
A committed Christian believer will not find the film helpful.

Comments about PBS Last Days of Jesus DVD:

I found the "Last Days of Jesus" to be interesting and informative. Many of the things brought up, such as the date of Palm Sunday, the real amount of time Jesus spent in Nazareth, and the political undercurrents of the times make perfect sense. Certainly as possible as the record of the Bible which was written decades after his life and is clearly a book of propaganda to promote christianity. This should be interesting to people with open minds. One doesn't have to accept everything offered in the video but overall a very interesting possibility. I apologize if I have offended any of the ardent christians in your other reviews. They obviously accept the Bible as 100% absolute truth. Perhaps it would be better if they would not view anything that disagrees with their rigid beliefs

Unlike the several other revues I thought that the hypothesis as put forth in The Last Days of Jesus answers a lot of the questions that a critical reading of the story of Jesus's last days. It is a two hour long program that I believe was well produced.
I highly recommend this DVD. It is not the usual Easter story but a breath of fresh air .
    Thank you PBS
