"My grandparents became mega-stars," Michael Tilson Thomas remembers, "and found themselves smack in the public eye with fans obsessed with every detail of their lives. It was a far cry from the simple Jewish family life in the Ukrainian villages of their origin." In THE THOMASHEFSKYS, Tilson Thomas explores the lives of his grandparents through a performance that features the New World Symphony orchestra.

Comments about PBS The Thomashefskys DVD:

This is a brilliantly conceived and executed show of a little known but important history of both the Jewish Culture's evolution and transplantation of their immigrant experience in America as well as the important contributions it made to the American Musical Theatre and theatre. Indeed, it demonstrates the essential role it played in the development of the Broadway Theatre. It is, also, the history of New York City.
Mr. Thomas has managed to tell a personal, at times, painful family story with love and humor, providing insights and details only a family member
could know. The individual character histories are shown to be forerunners of social movements that continue and are relatable to the viewer, until today. His Grandmother's story, while unique, is an example of the common plight of women throughout history, while that of the experience of show business stars. Her strength, tenacity, and self-respect motivates many of her decisions and are most admirable and inspiring.
The Music is beautifully, appropriately, and knowledgeably composed.
It's an engaging introduction to this marvelously, rich culture too few know. Tilson Thomas has a wonderful understanding and rapport with the audience on a level it can understand, here, as his "Keeping Score" series
evidences with often complex materials.
The program's approach and context is completely original and creatively done, and it is not featured nearly often enough. In a sentence, it is one of the best productions of the last year. at least.
I loved it. See it.

Comments about PBS The Thomashefskys DVD:

This is a brilliant and masterful production which captures the essence of Jewishness. Told through the genius of the grandson, it combines theater, story-telling, music, dance and audience participation to make an emotionally stirring presentation of the lasting power of Yiddish culture and its unique contribution to humanity. This show is also a creative landmark for television by combining live performance and projected imagry in a totally compelling way. Give it Peabodies, Emmys and a history award. What a show!!
