Upstairs/Downstairs and Downton Abbey made the lives of both the gentry and the people in service look so exciting and romantic. But this book shows us that the people at both ends of the staircase lived lives that were rigidly controlled with very little room for personal choice. From five clothing changes a day (upstairs) to ironing the newspaper (downstairs), these people were locked into daily routines that weren't subject to change. This is a great book if you like the stories from the turn of the century. You will view the fictional characters with a different perspective.
